What is GEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing a brand's digital presence to appear in responses generated by AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot.

Unlike traditional SEO — which aims to get your website to appear in Google's top results — GEO aims to have AI spontaneously mention and recommend your brand when a user asks questions related to your sector or product.

Concrete example

If someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best HR software for a small business?", the brands that appear in that answer capture the user's interest before they even reach Google. Brands that don't appear don't exist for that potential customer.

GEO vs SEO: Key Differences

SEO and GEO are complementary, but they follow different logic. This table summarizes the main differences:

Dimension SEO (Google) GEO (ChatGPT, Perplexity, etc.)
Objective Rank in Google positions Be mentioned in AI responses
Core metric SERP position, organic clicks AI Share of Voice (mentions/total)
Content type Keywords, density, backlinks Concrete data, comparisons, structured FAQs
Technical structure Meta tags, speed, Core Web Vitals Schema Markup, llms.txt, descriptive URLs
Distribution One channel (Google) 5+ platforms with different logic
Time to results 3–12 months 30–90 days (first results)
Critical note

For Perplexity and Claude, Google SEO is a prerequisite for GEO. Both platforms use Google as a real-time search engine (RAG — Retrieval-Augmented Generation) to build their responses. If you don't rank in Google, these AIs won't find you either.

The 5 AI Platforms That Matter

Not all AI platforms work the same way or use the same sources. This distinction is critical for designing the right strategy:

ChatGPT (OpenAI) 600M users/month

Most used globally. Combines trained knowledge with real-time web search. Each platform has its own logic — what works to appear in ChatGPT doesn't necessarily work on the others.

Perplexity 100M users/month

Cites sources directly in responses — high B2B impact. The sources it prioritizes depend on the model's own signals, different from Google's.

Gemini (Google) 350M users/month

Integrated into the Google ecosystem. Its real-time source is Google's index — creating a different dynamic from models that build responses from training data.

Claude (Anthropic) 150M users/month

Longer, more detailed responses. Tends to prioritize sources with verifiable, well-structured information. High accuracy in specialized sectors.

Microsoft Copilot 200M users/month

Integrated in Windows and Microsoft 365 — high corporate penetration. In our audits we find brands with very different results in Copilot vs. the other platforms.

What a GEO Strategy Involves

GEO is not a one-time action — it's layered work. Each AI engine has different sources and biases, meaning the strategy to appear in ChatGPT is not the same as appearing in Perplexity or Gemini. A brand can have high visibility in one engine and be invisible in the other four.

The variables that determine whether a brand appears involve: presence in the right sources for the sector, quality and structure of owned content, consistency of data circulating about the company online, and technical signals that model crawlers need to read and interpret the site. The relative weight of each variable changes by platform and sector.

What is constant: without measuring the starting point, it's impossible to know what's working. Every GEO strategy starts by establishing the brand's current Share of Voice — and that of its competitors.

How Success is Measured in GEO

The central metric of GEO is AI Share of Voice: how often your brand appears spontaneously when someone asks sector-related questions in the main AI engines.

Measuring it requires a specific methodology. A single search is not representative — AI engine responses vary by session context, history, platform, and type of question. A GEO Audit establishes the real baseline: how often your brand appears, at what position, with what description, and how that compares to your direct competitors on each platform.

Without that baseline, any optimization action is in the dark.

Real case — Argentine company

In a 2026 audit: the brand didn't appear in any relevant interaction in their sector across 5 platforms. Main competitors appeared consistently. The company was known when directly named — but never appeared when someone searched for sector options without mentioning any names.

GEO in Argentina: Current Market State

As of mid-2026, most companies in Argentina have no GEO strategy and don't measure their AI Share of Voice. That creates a concrete opportunity window: brands that build AI engine authority now will be the hardest to displace later.

The effect mirrors SEO 15 years ago. Companies that invested in Google positioning when competitors still ignored it now dominate first positions in their sectors. GEO follows the same logic — with the difference that Argentina's market is still in a very early stage.

Additionally, AI engines that use Google as a real-time source (Perplexity, Claude, Gemini) cite Spanish-language content when the query is in Spanish. This means an Argentine company with solid presence in the right channels can directly compete with larger international brands.
